Shotgun Suppressor Guide: Mounts, Ammo Limits and Real Specs
A shotgun suppressor mounts on the choke threads and works with wadded shot, buckshot and some slugs, but each maker limits the loads.

Update, October 10, 2026: On October 9, ATF stopped requiring a Form 4, federal registration or a tax stamp for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs and AOWs, for everyone nationwide. State law still applies. How buying a suppressor works now.
A shotgun suppressor is a muzzle device designed to reduce the noise and muzzle blast of a shotgun, but it works differently from the rifle cans most shooters already know. Because shotguns fire a wad and a payload of shot or a single slug the bore has to be large enough for that column to pass safely, and the host gun, choke, and ammunition all have to match the suppressor’s limits. For a new user, the useful starting point is simple: not every shotgun can take a can, not every shell is safe to run through one, and the mount and barrel setup matter as much as the suppressor itself.

Here is how shotgun suppressors mount, what they cost, the load limits the makers publish, and why their sound numbers cannot be compared side by side.
Safety and legal note. This article is general information, not legal advice. Follow the manufacturer’s ammunition, choke and barrel-length limits exactly, because the wrong load can damage the suppressor or the gun. Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act, nine jurisdictions ban civilian possession, and hunting rules vary by state. Popular Suppressors has no affiliate or paid relationship with any maker named here.
Shotgun Suppressors at a Glance
- Mount: they thread into the shotgun’s choke system, with the choke built into the mount.
- Loads: wadded shot and buckshot are the norm. Rifled slugs and flight-controlled wads are out on the SilencerCo Salvo 12.
- Steel and dense shot: restricted with tighter chokes. Check the manual.
- Price: $889.95 to $1,229 MSRP for the three we checked.
- Sound claims: measured three different ways by three makers. Do not compare them directly.
Can You Put a Suppressor on a Shotgun?
Yes. Shotgun suppressors are sold in 12 and 20 gauge, among others, and the three we checked attach through the choke tube threads rather than a threaded muzzle like a rifle. On the SilencerCo Salvo 12, the mount is an Echo choke mount in Improved Cylinder, Improved Modified, Modified or Full. Banish ships its SGN 12 TI with three choke tubes: Improved Cylinder, Modified and Full. YHM’s Victra-20 uses a mount that threads into the existing choke threads.
Federally, a shotgun suppressor is a suppressor like any other. The federal tax is $0 since January 1, 2026, ATF still treats registration as required, and state law applies on top. Our suppressor laws by state map lists 42 jurisdictions that allow civilian ownership and 9 that do not.
Shotgun Suppressors Compared
| Model | Length, weight | Material | MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| SilencerCo Salvo 12 | 6.74 to 12 in, 19.6 to 34.4 oz | Aluminum, 17-4 stainless | $1,169 |
| Banish SGN 12 TI | 8.55 in, 17.6 oz | Titanium | $1,229 |
| YHM Victra-20 (20 ga) | 4.4 to 10.4 in, 12 to 22 oz | 7075 aluminum, 17-4 stainless | $889.95 |
From each manufacturer’s product page, checked September 2026. The Salvo 12 and Victra-20 are modular, so length and weight change with the configuration.
Why the Sound Numbers Do Not Compare

This is where I would be skeptical. SilencerCo lists the Salvo 12 at 136.8 dB at the muzzle with #7 shot in its full 12-inch setup. YHM lists the Victra-20 at 132 dB at the shooter’s ear in its 10-inch setup. Banish lists the SGN 12 TI as “up to 21 dB” of reduction. One is measured at the muzzle, one at the ear, and one is a reduction with no starting number. You cannot line those up and pick a winner. Our Banish 12 write-up covers that model in more detail.

What Ammo Can You Shoot Through a Shotgun Suppressor?
This is the part to read twice. The makers publish specific limits:
- SilencerCo Salvo 12: wadded shells up to 3 inches, including buckshot and non-rifled slugs. Not for rifled slugs or flight-controlled wads. Steel shot is not for the Improved Modified or Full chokes. Velocity is capped at 1,550 fps with a barrel of 16 inches or more, and 1,350 fps with a 10- to 16-inch barrel.
- YHM Victra-20: wadded or factory-loaded 20 gauge only, up to 3.5-inch shells with a barrel of 16 inches or more. No Hevi-Shot or Federal TSS, no tungsten or bismuth with a full choke, and no Flitecontrol or Versatite wads.
From the bench, here is why that matters. A shot column and wad are not a bullet riding down the center of a bore. Follow the published list and do not experiment.
Is a Shotgun Suppressor Worth It?
For hunters who shoot a lot of shells in a morning, like waterfowl, doves or clays, a quieter gun is easier on everyone nearby, but hearing protection is still the rule. For a home defense shotgun, the added length is the cost. And for everyone, the load list decides a lot: if your favorite ammo is on the maker’s no list, that can is not for you. Before you hunt with one, check your state; our suppressor hunting laws guide covers where it is allowed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do shotgun suppressors actually work?
They reduce the report, and the makers publish figures, but those figures are measured in different ways, so compare them with care.
Can you shoot slugs through a shotgun suppressor?
Some. SilencerCo allows non-rifled slugs in the Salvo 12 and prohibits rifled slugs. Check your suppressor’s manual for its own list.
Can you shoot steel shot through a suppressed shotgun?
With limits. SilencerCo says steel shot is not compatible with its Improved Modified or Full choke mounts on the Salvo 12.
How much does a shotgun suppressor cost?
The three we checked list at $889.95 to $1,229 MSRP. Our suppressor cost calculator adds up the rest.
Pick the gauge, read the ammo list before the price tag, and treat any sound claim as marketing until you know where it was measured. If you are still choosing the shells themselves, Popular Ammo breaks down 12 gauge shotgun shells by size and load.
