Why a Short Suppressor Works on an AR-15
Every inch of suppressor hangs past the end of the barrel, so a full-length 5.56 suppressor can add 6 to 7 inches to a rifle. On a 10.5-inch or 11.5-inch AR, or a rifle you carry in and out of a truck, that extra length is what makes a suppressed rifle awkward. The Speed K adds 4 inches.
To make up for the short length, the Speed K is wider than most 5.56 suppressors at 2 inches across. That extra diameter gives the gas more room to expand. It still will not match a longer suppressor for sound, and Silencer Central’s 20.9 dB figure reflects that. Silencer Central also says it adds less than 6 percent to the gas blown back at the shooter, which matters on a short AR that already runs hot and dirty.
